Praise for Magical Years: Memories & Sketches

"'Magic' is the key word in the art of Cecilia Manguerra Brainard. Every drawing transports you to a different world and a different time, and you cannot ever come back unchanged." ~ Tony Perez, Playwright, Novelist, & Painter

"Drawings are often ignored as being mere steps to painting, but with Cecilia Brainard you take them on their own -- as visual notes, windows to memory and history." ~ Ambeth R. Ocampo, Historian

"Oh, Cecilia - I love your book. You DO capture the luminosity of childhood, something that I personally feel so strongly, and strive over and over to share with the rest of the world through my stories. Here you reveal it so sweetly. Thank you very much... If this seems childlike, it is, and you brought it out. Really wonderful, Cecilia." ~ Carlene Sobrino Bonnivier, Writer

"Your book arrived today and I couldn't be more impressed! The book is just totally charming and lovely. The quality of the paper and book cover are wonderful.  I love that the book pays homage to Cebu and your memories there, but it's also, I think, an homage to your parents and the loving memories you have as a little girl with them. I think you feel about Cebu like I do about Redondo ... it's not just in my heart but in my bones and my marrow!
It really is an utterly charming book ... memories enhanced with your drawings. I love it." ~ Hilary Walling, Writer

"I read the Magical Years and found it magical as I too was transported to my childhood years ... very nostalgic ... I was teary-eyed. In other words, it was a sentimental journey."  ~ Maribel Paras, Life Coach

Introduction of Magical Years: Memories & Sketches
by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard

FROM THE TIME I was born until my father died when I was nine, life seemed to glow with joyful intensity. Every moment filled my childhood senses: colors were more brilliant, scents sweeter, sounds louder, feelings more acute. When my father had his fatal heart attack in Hong Kong, my heart broke, and our home was plunged in darkness.

But those early magical years seemed to stretch into a kind of eternity: a rainfall, a trip to the bookstore, an afternoon car ride, a Sunday picnic, the haunted house on the hill . . . People and places of Cebu -- my world -- shone with a numinosity that I never again experienced.

This book of sketches tries to capture childhood images, memories now gone.

How I started sketching is a wonder in itself because I had no training in art at all, but one December not too long ago, I came across a simple book about sketching. I picked up paper and pencil and started working. These sketches are rendered in reed and pen and ink. They are not accurate images, but to me, they evoke feelings of what I call my magical years.

I sincerely hope you experience some of the magic and joy that I had experienced as a child.

Many thanks to my family (Lauren, Chris, Alex, and Andrew) for their love and unflagging support. Special thanks to Tony Perez for his guidance regarding my artwork.
